I was first introduced to the concept of bio-individuality during my studies in holistic health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). Bio-individuality suggests that what nourishes one person might deplete another, acknowledging the unique nature of our bodies and how they process nutrients. Reflecting on this, I've realized how personalized nutrition, which considers factors like DNA, race, gender, health history, and lifestyle habits, aligns well with the concept of bio-individuality. Throw in my curiosity to use food sensitivity testing, and herein lies my current exploration.

My Personal Experience: Unmasking Gluten's Impact on Me

Samantha Shannon hit the nail on the head: “Knowledge is dangerous. Once you know something, you can't un-know it. You have to carry it. Always.” This resonates with me now more than ever since exploring Everlywell's Food Sensitivity Comprehensive Test. The test measures IgG antibody reactions to 204 foods. My results? A big red flag for gluten, rye, and wheat. My thoughts? Oh no! Yes, I have come a long way since my college days of Busch Light (essentially water) to appreciate a good local beer. But armed with this newfound knowledge, I strive for balance, more than ever, especially during my après-ski indulgences.

As a mid-life, newly found gluten-sensitive soul with a soft spot for local IPAs and stouts, I've learned the hard way that what I enjoy today can make my joints yell at me tomorrow.   • Choose Health-Supporting Fats: The type of fats consumed significantly impacts health. Trans fats should be avoided, while the intake of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, should be encouraged for their benefits to heart health and cholesterol levels.

Currently, I'm engrossed in Dr. Peter Attia's “Outlive.” Dr. Attia challenges the traditional notion of dieting, advocating instead for a focus on nutritional biochemistry. This approach aligns seamlessly with the principles of bio-individuality and personalized nutrition. Dr. Attia emphasizes the importance of using technology and data to tailor your eating patterns to your unique biological makeup. Nutritional biochemistry takes into account how various nutrients affect our hormones, enzyme functions, and overall cellular health. By understanding these interactions, we can make dietary choices that nourish us and help prevent chronic diseases, thereby optimizing our healthspan.
